How to Use Apache Spam Assassin

Got spam? Many of us do, and with how easy it is to get your email address on lists, it's no wonder! You don't need to let spam bog you down though, and with cPanel we offer a tool that can help! Apache SpamAssassin is an account level filter that will screen email coming into your hosting server and allow you to filter out what you don't need, while keeping those important emails. There are a few tricks to learning it, so let's get started!

  1. Login to your cPanel account.

  2. Once you are in cPanel's home page, located the 'Mail' section towards the top, then select the 'Apache SpamAssassin' icon.

  1. From the first window, you will be given several options to enable and use Apache SpamAssassin:

    1. Select this button to ensure that SpamAssassin is Enabled.

    2. SpamAssassin's spam delete filter. Any message marked as spam will go through a filter and be deleted off your server automatically if it is higher than the score level you set.

    3. Select this to disable the auto delete feature for your spam filter. This is recommended when you first setup Apache SpamAssassin, as you may loose valuable email that was marked as spam by mistake. Until you get the filter strength right for your needs, keep this turned off.

    4. Configuring Apache SpamAssassin will take you to a new page with additional settings to help customize your filter.

  1. Here is the Configuration window for SpamAssassin where you can set custom blacklists and whitelists for your account filter:

    1. This section is your blacklist, where you can enter any email address you would like blocked from the server. Any email listed here won't even make it to your spam folder, but is denied. You can add more than 4 addresses to the list, more spaces will be automatically created for you as needed.

    2. Required Score is the filter strength of the spam filter. It is scaled from 0.0 to 10.0 with the lower the number you choose, the stronger the filter will be.

    3. The Whitelist Score is for email address you want to always make it to your inbox, regardless of your filter strength. This list will apply to your entire hosting account, and like the blacklist section, additional spaces will be added as needed.
