How to Connect to an FTP Client

Creating an FTP Account is wonderful, but to use it we need to connect to a client that will create the connection between your hosting account and you.  What client should you  pick though??  There are several options to choose from, but here are a few very good choices, which you can select to be taken to their various download  pages:

FileZilla

CyberDuck

FireFTP (Firefox Browser Only)

Once you have your client downloaded, we're ready to begin connecting!

  1. If you haven't setup an FTP account yet, you will need to do so here.

  2. Once you have the account setup, make sure you grab the full username and password.  You will need 4 pieces of information to connect to FTP:

    1. Host

    2. Username

    3. Password

    4. Port

  3. The Host is your hosting account's IP address, which is located on the left side of your cPanel main window.  To view it, locate the 'Stats' section on the left, then select the blue hyperlink labeled Expand Stats.

  1. From there, scroll down again until you find the line labeled 'Shared IP Address' and the IP address needed will be located to the right.

  1. The Username is the FTP username you created and the Password is the FTP Account password.  The port number is 21 for you to use.

  2. Once you have the login information, open your FTP and place the information in the area provided, then hit 'Quickconnect.'

  1. Once connected, you will be able to transfer files and folders by dragging and dropping the contents from one side of the screen to the other!   Just be sure you navigate to the desired directory  as  you make the data transfer, so it is easier to handle that information later.
