Latency to Gateway

Latency to Gateway

Why you may see higher latency

When you run ICMP ping tests to your gateway, you may notice higher latency. This is expected behavior. Network switches do not prioritize ICMP traffic, so replies are processed at a lower priority. This can also affect traceroutes, since they rely on ICMP responses as well.

What you need to know

  • Your actual data traffic is not affected

  • Forwarding and throughput happen at normal speed

  • Only ICMP pings and traceroute hop responses show increased latency

  • This design prioritizes customer throughput and performance

  • This behavior is common in enterprise networks
